Sunshine returned to all but far eastern parts of the viewing area on Tuesday. Low clouds and fog have hung on for areas around Lake Cumberland and along the Cumberland Plateau. Everyone should see a good dose of sunshine today with southwest winds sending readings well into the 50s after a chilly start. We’ll stay mild through this evening before a big change occurs Thursday morning.

We will be greeted to the return of cold, arctic air Thursday morning! Highs Thursday will struggle just to make the upper 20s with blustery northwest winds behind a cold front that will blast through early in the day. A few flurries or light snow showers may accompany the front’s passage. The air mass moderates just slightly Friday before a second, even colder shot of air arrives Saturday. Highs will be about 20° below average through Valentine’s Day weekend, only in the 20s to near 30°. Lows will plunge into the single digits Saturday night – and – with gusty winds of 20-30 mph, sub-zero wind chills will be likely!

While it won’t be as cold Monday (President’s Day) into Tuesday, the air may be cold enough to allow for wintry weather Monday night. That’s when a more significant storm system is likely to arrive, with chances for rain and snow on the board heading into Tuesday.
